Yoga is the Science of Self Realization

Asana, the movement, helps you tune into your physical body in a way that creates space and enhances well-being. Movement is LIFE. Whether it be a slow quiet restorative practice, or an active energizing practice, or a rejuvenating practice after illness or injury, we will work together to develop what is optimal for you. What you need depends on many things, like your body structure, whether you have injuries or limitations, and of course your desires. Anyone can practice asana or movement, it just needs to be taylored specifically for you! The teachings for asana is to explore and create space within the body tissues for the prana or energy to flow. When there is no flow, dis-ease can occur.

Pranayama, the breath, helps you to connect with emotions, feelings, and patterns within the body/mind and begin to shift them. Watching your breathing as you sit quietly can be quite informative. Did you know that most people have fairly shallow breathing which triggers the sympathetic nervous system. This system is our flight or fight system, and is needed when there is danger, but not a regular daily basis. Learning proper breathing mechanics can enhance our wellness considerably. The teaching here is when you need to shift your thoughts or emotions, practice Pranayama. It will have an immediate and profound affect.

Meditation, the calm, helps quiet the mind which allows you to LIVE in the world fully present and at ease, without disturbance or being pulled away from your Self. The Great Sage Patanjali tells us, “the self abides in its own nature.” When we learn how to meditate we find our own true self shining beneath the disturbance. This teaching helps us to keep a calm, quiet perspective while moving through the many distractions in the world. We become less reactive and more mindful in our daily lives.

“Meditation gives you what nothing else can give you: it introduces you to yourself” Swami Rama
